Sergey Tkachenko
DIRECTOR OF MUSIC
WHAT LED YOU TO THIS ROLE?
I was drawn to MWPC by its thriving music ministry, which offers three diverse ensembles for weekly worship. My skills and training align closely with the church’s musical traditions. Moreover, MWPC’s commitment to inclusivity and its passionate leadership team made me feel warmly welcomed and supported. I’m eager to build relationships with the musicians and church community in the months ahead.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love story-telling through music. I get a sense of accomplishment from tapping into the meaning of a piece of music and effectively conveying that to the listener. I am also a goose-bump fanatic. I love making inspired music with great musicians and welcome a good challenge.
WHAT LED YOU TO THIS ROLE?
I have always enjoyed singing in choirs. In high school, choir was my refuge. It was the place where I felt a sense of belonging and could contribute to something good and beautiful. I wanted to do what my choir directors were doing, so I set out to get a degree in Music Education. Teaching and preaching runs in my family. My great-grandfather was a priest in the Orthodox church. My grandmother and grandfather were both school teachers. Being a music director allows me to do both.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF?
I was born in Ukraine, grew up in Queens, taught high school choir for 7 years, and am now working on my doctorate in choral conducting at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. I am fluent in Russian, and love to travel and learn new languages. I have 3 siblings, and am a proud uncle. I love being active. Hiking, kayaking, swimming, riding my bike, playing a game of tennis or volleyball, or simply taking a nice walk. I love to cook and make cocktails. Nothing beats sharing a meal with friends and family.
